How to Grow

A simple seven-step process that works in any garden.

1

Plan your space

Observe sun for a full day. Most fruiting crops need 6+ hours of sun. Sketch your beds or pots and group crops by family for rotation.

2

Prepare the soil

Dig in well-rotted compost or manure. Aim for crumbly, moisture-retaining soil. Containers need peat-free multipurpose compost with added perlite for drainage.

3

Sow or plant

Seeds: sow at the depth on the packet and water gently. Transplants: plant on a cloudy evening and water in. Use seed trays indoors for heat-loving crops.

4

Water well

Water deeply and less often rather than little and often. Water the roots, not the leaves, and water in the morning when possible. Mulch to hold moisture.

5

Feed & support

Feed fruiting plants with a potash-rich fertiliser once flowers appear. Add stakes, cages or netting early, before plants get large.

6

Protect from pests

Hand-pick caterpillars, use slug traps or beer traps, and fit fine mesh over carrots and brassicas. Encourage ladybirds, hoverflies and birds.

7

Keep records

Note sowing dates, varieties and yields. Your notes will become your best guide for next year.
