Damping off
Disease A fungal disease that rots seedlings at the base so they collapse.
What to look for
Seedlings suddenly collapse at compost level, with a thin, dark, pinched stem. Mould may grow on the compost surface.
When: Late winter to spring, when seedlings are raised indoors.
How to prevent it
- Use clean pots and fresh compost.
- Water with tap water rather than from open water butts.
- Sow thinly, avoid overwatering and ventilate seed trays.
- Start sowing in a warm, bright place so seedlings grow quickly.
How to deal with it
- Remove affected seedlings and the surrounding compost.
- Ease off watering and improve ventilation.
- Resow in fresh compost if many are lost.
Crops it affects
