Drought and irregular watering
Growing problem Dry spells cause wilting, flower and fruit drop, bolting and poor crops.
What to look for
Wilting, scorched leaf edges, flowers and young fruit dropping, small or tough crops, and plants that sulk through dry spells.
When: May to September, especially during heatwaves.
How to prevent it
- Mulch beds with compost or bark to hold moisture.
- Water deeply and less often, rather than a little every day.
- Water early in the morning at the base of plants.
- Collect rainwater in butts and use a drip hose or seep hose.
How to deal with it
- Prioritise watering seedlings, newly planted crops, fruiting vegetables and container plants.
- Shade tender plants in heatwaves.
- Give a general feed once the plant recovers.
