Root and crown rot
Disease Rot caused by waterlogged soil that kills roots and plants.
What to look for
Wilting or yellowing leaves despite wet soil. The roots are brown and mushy, and the base of the plant may be soft. Mediterranean herbs suffer first.
When: Mainly autumn to spring, in wet weather.
How to prevent it
- Grow in free-draining soil, raised beds or pots with drainage holes.
- Add grit to heavy soil and avoid planting too deeply.
- Do not overwater, especially in winter.
How to deal with it
- Lift the plant, cut away rotten roots, and replant in better-drained soil if it can be saved.
- Stop watering and let the soil dry out.
- Replace affected plants and avoid the same spot until the drainage is improved.
