Apple and pear scab
Disease A fungus that causes dark scabby spots on leaves and fruit.
What to look for
Olive-green or dark brown scabby spots on leaves and fruit, and cracked, misshapen fruit. Blistered shoots can occur on pears.
When: Spring to autumn, in wet weather.
How to prevent it
- Rake up and bin fallen leaves in autumn, where the fungus overwinters.
- Prune to create an open tree with good air flow.
- Choose scab-resistant varieties.
How to deal with it
- Pick off and bin infected fruit.
- Prune out blistered shoots in winter.
- Lightly scabby apples are safe to eat, so cut away the blemishes.
