Wind damage
Growing problem Strong winds snap stems, shred leaves and dry out plants.
What to look for
Snapped or bent stems, torn leaves, rocking plants, and scorched, crispy leaf edges.
When: Autumn to spring.
How to prevent it
- Grow tall crops like sweetcorn, brussels sprouts and beans in sheltered spots.
- Use a semi-permeable windbreak such as a hedge or windbreak netting, which slows wind better than a solid wall.
- Stake tall crops and tie them in securely.
How to deal with it
- Re-firm plants rocked loose by the wind.
- Cut away damaged stems and support the plant.
- Water after windy weather, as wind dries soil quickly.
