Plants that spread and self-seed
Growing problem Some herbs and vegetables spread by runners, roots or seed and can take over a bed.
What to look for
Mint, lemon balm, horseradish, Jerusalem artichoke, chives and others pop up all over the bed or garden.
When: Spring to autumn.
How to prevent it
- Grow mint and other runners in a pot, or sink a bottomless bucket into the soil to contain the roots.
- Deadhead before seed ripens.
- Plant Jerusalem artichokes where they can be left alone, and remove all tubers when lifting.
How to deal with it
- Pull up seedlings when small.
- Dig out roots and runners completely, as even small fragments can regrow.
- Cut back plants hard if they are getting out of hand.
